Expect the Unexpected
First and foremost, no two PPE expeditions are alike. Each is a bespoke adventure that means we are always facing new challenges and unknowns. Sometimes we face unforeseen obstacles, forcing us to change plans on the fly and often find ourselves in situations that need flexibility and out-of-the-box thinking. That is pretty much the standard for us.
Sandstorms, unexpected tips from other travelers, tracks that disappear…
Ethos
If there are two defining qualities of badged PPE members it is the ability to work as a team and maintain a sense of humor when the going gets tough or the unexpected happens. We expect everyone to pitch in, pull their weight and adapt as expeditions unfold. It doesn’t matter who you are out in the normal world, on an expedition you are a navigator, a mechanic, a first aider, a cook, a photographer or just a friend with a shovel when a fellow crew needs a hand.
Patrols
During expeditions with more than four vehicles, we divide crews up into patrols. Each patrol has a leader, a navigator, a medic and can operate independently when needed. Each patrol is given tasks each day to achieve. This can include an area to search for historical artifacts, to find a route through challenging terrain or just to move independently to an RV for the night. We sometimes set competitive challenges for patrols and build teamwork through working to achieve objectives. All this goes to make evenings around the campfire all the more fun to compare how we all did.
