Vehicle Categories
CAT 1 Vehicles
PPE expeditions are typically defined by what we call Category 1 trucks. While predominantly Land Rovers, these are vehicles that can be stripped down easily for the desert, including removing roofs, doors and windscreens. We generally ask that these also be painted in some sort of ‘desert’ colour.

CAT 2 Vehicles
CAT 2 vehicles are any suitable 4x4 overland-equipped vehicles that do not meet the CAT 1 requirements.

Drivers & Co-Drivers
For desert expeditions, PPE strongly recommends a minimum 2-person crew for each vehicle. Driver/owners are free to select their own co-drivers but if they do not have anyone, we maintain a list of former and prospective co-drivers that they can interview to select as a crew mate.
Co-drivers are expected to cover half the expedition costs for the crew and make a contribution to vehicle prep and post trip-repairs.

Expedition Logistics
Each vehicle crew is expected to be self-sustaining in the desert. Camping gear, food and cook sets, fuel, water and a reasonable selection of tools and spares for your vehicle are required. We provide crews with a minimum kit list ahead of each expedition for personal and vehicle gear.
During each expedition we have designated medics who will be able to deal with routine cuts and scrapes as more serious injuries if needed.
We also always engage a local expedition support company that provides local knowledge, prepares permits and can provide assistance if a vehicle needs additional spares or repairs.
